Beacon Bay Emergency Unit

Volumes of patients

Established in 2009, the growth of patient numbers at Life Beacon Bay has been phenomenal. From around 600 patients per month, the numbers now exceed 100 per month, showing the trust the community has developed in this brand new emergency unit over a very short period of time.

Clinical Profile

This unit manages adult and paediatric emergencies, with the focus being on neonatal, paeditric, neurosurgical and emergencies during pregnancy. A strong focus is also placed on the development of the WCA patient profile. The unit has rapidly established itself as the premier paediatric unit in the region.

Fees & Administration Fee

An administration levy of R70-00 is charged to all medical aid patients This amount is collected at the time of consultation. The patients account is then submitted to medical aid directly by ER Consulting Inc. provided the correct information is given.

Triage

South African Triage Group (SATG) protocols are employed in the unit. All patients are triaged on arrival and are allocated a colour. This colour represents the acuity of the patient and the order in which the patient will be seen.

Doctor Model

The unit is lead by a senior doctor with 5 years experience in emergency medicine. A further 2 full time ER Consulting Inc. doctors assist with the cover with the balance of the hours completed by accredited locum doctors. A proud tradition of support by surrounding GP practices ensure high quality service delivery from experienced clinicians.

Locums

All locums are ER Consulting Inc. accredited. The locum pool is mostly shared with Life St Dominic’s ensuring all our doctors get exposure to all aspects of Emergency Medicine.

Shifts

Doctors work in 12 hour shifts with an additional doctor being on call should patient volumes exceed the capability of a single clinician.

Administration

A full time unit administrator is employed by ER Consulting Inc. to perform all administrative tasks on site. The administrative data is exported to head office where the full process is completed.

Continued Professional Development

ER Consulting Inc. hosts accredited monthly Morbidity and Mortality meetings that are attended by specialist, nursing staff and paramedics. These meetings are exceptionally well attended and is run in conjunction with the Life St. Dominic’s Emergency Unit.

WCA/COID

Numerous businesses in the area make use of the efficient WCA service that accepts all patients injured on duty, provided a copy of their ID book and the Employer’s Report are present. This documentation is then collated by our unit administrator together with the First & Progress Medical Reports before being submitted to our head office for processing. The growth in patient numbers of WCA cases is a specific focus area for the unit.

Clinical Protocols

ER Consulting Inc. operates according to international best practice and is guided by the ER Consulting Inc. clinical guidelines which is available in electronic format and accessible 24 hours per day. Additionally there are hard copies of the SAMF and MIMS guidelines in the unit. The ER Consulting Inc National Clinical Director ensures that all doctors are up to date through the innovative clinical proficiency scorecard, providing training for our doctors through our dedicated training facility in Gauteng.

Events

ER Consulting Inc has a proud tradition of supplying support to the Iron Man 70.3 held annually in East London in conjunction with the Life St Dominic’s Emergency unit. Dedicated sport injury protocols developed specifically for the need of this event is one of the proud achievements of the dedicated clinical team in the Eastern Cape.

Research

The clinical heads of Life St Dominic’s and Life Beacon Bay are in the process of developing academic publication guidelines which will be launched in the foreseeable future.
