Clinical profile
Severe Medical Cases: Pneumonia, Diabetic Keto-acidosis, Paediatrics: febrile convulsions, gastroenteritis, meningitis Trauma: from mild sprained ankles and knees to poly-system trauma, Injuries on duty – fall from height, eye injuries, back injuries.

Fees and Administration fee
This unit charges medical aid rates for emergency or unscheduled consultations. The patients account is submitted to medical aid directly by ER Consulting Inc. All medical aid patients are charged an administration levy of R100-00 that is non refundable by medical aids

Triage
South African Triage Group (SATG) protocols are employed in the unit. All patients are triaged on arrival and are allocated a colour. This colour represents the acuity of the patient and the order in which the patient will be seen.

Doctor Model
The Clinical Head of department and one full time emergency unit doctors make up the clinical team employed by ER Consulting Inc

Locums
A select group of ER Consulting Inc. accredited locums are utilised in the unit. Locum shifts do not account for more than 20% of the total hours covered.
Shifts
Monday: 7–4 and 10–7 double up
Tuesday: 7–1, 1–7 and double up from 10–4
Wednesday to Sunday: 7–1, 1–7
Nights: 7pm to 7am-
Administration
A trained unit administrator are employed by ER Consulting Inc to perform all administrative tasks on site.

Continued Professional Development
ER Consulting hosts accredited monthly Morbidity and Mortality meetings that are attended by specialists, nursing staff and paramedics.

WCA
20% of the patients seen on a monthly basis in the emergency unit are injured on duty. WCA patients are welcomed in the emergency unit provided a copy of their ID book and the Employer’s Report are present. This documentation is then collated by our unit administrator together with the First & Progress Medical Reports

Clinical Protocols
ER Consulting Inc. has developed a clinical protocol booklet in line with international best practice specifically tailored to the needs of the Carstenhof Emergency unit. Standard Clinical Protocols as per ACLS, PALS and ATLS are in use.

Research
Data is being collected for a quad bike study. Carstenhof is one of the sites at which this data is being collected.
