Volumes of patients

Nelspruit Mediclinic Emergency Unit sees 1600 patients on average per month. Our patient profile is diverse and includes international tourists visiting The Kruger National Park, as well as patients from Mozambique and Swaziland, and of course the local Mpumalanga residents.

Clinical profile

Regional trauma centre: Diverse clinical profile incorporating all adult and paediatric emergencies. Special mention must be made of the large number of ‘animal’ related injuries seen in this particular emergency unit due to the location of the unit.

Fees and Administration fee

All fees are charged at medical aid rates. No administration fee is levied by the doctor’s practice. This unit charges medical aid rates for emergency or unscheduled consultations. The doctor’s account is submitted to medical aid directly by ER Consulting Inc. Private patients are charged fees according to their triage colour and are required to settle their accounts at the time of consultation.

Triage

South African Triage Group (SATG) protocols are employed in the unit.

Doctor Model

Four full time emergency unit doctors make up the team employed by ER Consulting Inc in the unit. This experienced team delivers excellent service to the patients in a very pressured environment where the acuity of patients is consistently high.

Locums

A select group of ER Consulting Inc. accredited locums are utilised in the unit.

Administration

Two trained unit administrators are employed by ER Corporate (Pty)Ltd to perform all administrative tasks on site.

Continued Professional Development

ER Consulting hosts accredited monthly Morbidity and Mortality meetings that are attended by specialists, nursing staff and paramedics. Training is facilitated locally by the ER Training and Development Centre that hosts ACLS and PALS courses on request.

WCA

WCA patients are welcomed in the emergency unit provided a copy of their ID book and the Employer’s Report are present. This documentation is then collated by our unit administrators together with the First & Progress Medical Reports.

Clinical Protocols

ER Consulting Inc. has developed a clinical protocol booklet in line with international best practice specifically tailored to the needs of the Nelspruit Emergency unit. An online medical reference tool, PEPID, is also available in the unit to ensure clinical best practice.

Events

ER Consulting Inc. provides medical support to the major events in the Lowveld. These include the Inni-Bos Festival, the Jock Cycle Tour and various motor sport events to name but a few.

Research

Currently research is underway into quad bike injuries. Statistical analysis of animal related injuries seen in the unit is ongoing and will form the basis of a retrospective study for 2013.
