Volumes of patients

At Mediclinic Sandton Emergency Unit a wide variety of emergency cases with a strong paediatric profile are seen and treated. On average 1550 patients are consulted per month.

Clinical profile

All emergencies are catered for but a definite paediatric bias is seen at this unit. Excellent specialist support is available from all disciplines.

Fees and Administration fee

This unit charges medical aid rates for emergency or unscheduled consultations. The doctor’s account is submitted to medical aid directly by ER Consulting Inc. Private patients are charged fees according to their triage colour and are required to settle their accounts at the time of consultation.

Triage

South African Triage Group (SATG) protocols are employed in the unit. All patients are triaged on arrival and are allocated a colour. This colour represents the acuity of the patient and the order in which the patient will be seen.

Doctor Model

Most shifts are performed by permanent doctors with the balance of shifts performed by accredited locums. A fluid on call system ensures waiting times are kept to a minimum.

Locums

All locums are ER Consulting Inc. accredited. The locum pool is very small as most shifts are covered by full time doctors.

Shifts

Doctors work in 9 hour shifts with 2 doctors on duty between 10h00 and 16h00 daily. There is an additional doctor on call 24 hours a day.

Administration

A trained unit administrator is employed by ER Corporate (Pty) Ltd to perform all administrative tasks on site.

Continued Professional Development

ER Consulting Inc. hosts accredited monthly Morbidity & Mortality and CPD meetings attended by specialists, nursing staff and paramedics.
