The Bay Emergency Unit

Volumes of patients

Netcare’s The Bay Emergency Department consults a wide variety of emergency cases. Approximately 800 patients are consulted per month. A new unit is currently being built at the hospital which will enhance the service experience for patients attending the facility.

Clinical profile

This unit manages adult and paediatric emergencies incorporating trauma and medical cases. The unit is well supported by general specialist cover and is fast becoming the service of choice in an emergency, for the greater community. The acuity of patients in this unit is very high given the large geographic drainage area and the paucity of other facilities in the region.

Fees and Administration levy

This unit charges medical aid rates for emergency or unscheduled consultations. The patients account is submitted to medical aid directly by ER Consulting Inc. All medical aid patients are charged an administration levy of R70-00 that is non refundable by medical aids.

Triage

South African Triage Group (SATG) protocols are employed in the unit. All patients are triaged on arrival and are allocated a colour. This colour represents the acuity of the patient and the order in which the patient will be seen.

Doctor Model

The unit is covered by experienced emergency medicine doctors. These doctors cover the core hours while the balance of the hours are completed by accredited locum doctors.

Locums

All locums are ER Consulting Inc. accredited. ER Consulting Inc has a number of long term locums who work regularly in the unit and bring a large amount of valuable experience to our team.

Shifts

Doctors work in shifts with 1 doctor on duty. During busy times there is an additional doctor available on call 24 hours a day.

Administration

A full time unit administrator is employed by ER Corporate (Pty) Ltd to perform all administrative tasks on site. The administrative data is exported to head office where the full process is completed.

Continued Professional Development

ER Consulting Inc. hosts accredited monthly Morbidity & Mortality and CPD meetings attended by specialists, nursing staff and paramedics. These meetings offer the opportunity to discuss pertinent issues in the unit and to remedy any problems that may arise.

WCA/COID

Numerous businesses in the area make use of the efficient WCA service that accepts all patients injured on duty, provided a copy of their ID book and the Employer’s Report are present. This documentation is then collated by our unit administrator together with the First & Progress Medical Reports before being submitted to our head office for processing. ER Consulting Inc is currently enhancing its service offering and aims to grow this segment of patients.

Clinical Protocols

ER Consulting Inc. operates according to international best practice and is guided by the ER Consulting Inc. protocol booklet and the online medical reference tool, PEPID that is available in the unit. Furthermore our National Clinical Director ensures that all doctors are up to date by monitoring the innovative clinical proficiency scorecard (CPS).

Events

ER Consulting Inc. provides medical support to all events in the area. Our events division provides doctors for corporate events, conferences, sporting events and functions.
