Prospectus

As a health care provider,

  • Do you feel confident responding to emergencies within the constraints of your ED?
  • It is your ethical and legal duty – according to the Bill of Rights in the Constitution of SA – to be competent and efficient in an emergency!
  • Are YOU the weakest link in the emergency cardiac care chain of survival?
  • Do people flee when YOU are the appointed team leader for a “resus”?
  • Does your hospital have a rapid response team / medial emergency team?
  • Is everyone who might encounter a cardiac arrest or other emergency trained and practised to render optimal evidence-based care?
  • Are you comfortable that your hospital can legally defend its resuscitation policy and medical emergency response procedure?
  • Are you compliant with COHSASA accreditation requirements in terms of resuscitation?
  • Do you routinely get to defibrillate patients within 3 minutes of their arrest in your institution?
  • Are your emergency trolleys properly stocked? Do you know how to check your defibrillator?
  • Are you an effective team leader during a megacode? Does your team agree?
  • Do Paediatric emergencies scare you?
  • If you don’t feel prepared and confident to:
  • Skilfully resuscitate adults and children? To manage a resus? To defibrillate safely, quickly and effectively? To competently implement the latest international evidence-based emergency guidelines? ….then come and join us!

The paradox of the emergency – even if you only resuscitate seldom, when the emergency strikes you are expected to manage the situation as an expert…there’s no time for practise or reflection, nor reprieve!

The ER Training & Development Centre is proud to present our prospectus of learning programmes. AN APROACH TO CHEST PAIN & STROKE IN THE ED (incl STEMI prehospital fibrinolytics)

These common emergencies require a structured approach to recognise & differentiate the causes of life-threatening chest pain & stroke, and then to manage the patient rapidly & effectively,according to current best-practise evidence. This requires a systematised algorithmic approach, to achieve best outcomes. The administration of fibrinolytics will also be covered in this half-day programme, which is suitable for anyone who might be involved in managing chest pain & stroke patients, both prehospital & in the ED.

STROKE

An evidence-based approach to the immediate management of the suspected stroke patient, incorporating the stroke chain of survival will be reviewed. Early awareness is pivotal to the success of emergency stroke interventions, which if initiated early, can indeed decrease morbitity. Stroke, akin to the AMI, is a brain attack and can be managed if all the links are well integrated. This requires a systems-based approach.

The scenario and case-based programme explores the science behind the guidelines, and extends the ACLS provider’s knowledge, insight and practical proficiency, and delves into challenging special resuscitation situations. This AHA ACLS EP certificate will serve to update the providers ACLS status.

A comprehensive American Heart Association ACLS Resource Text for Instructors and Experienced Providers is supplied prior to the course and participants must study the manual prior to the course. Successful candidates receive 34 CEUs, incl 4 CPD points for Ethics.

OTHER RENEWAL OPTIONS for the AHA courses

What is e-Learning?

e-Learning is a novel, convenient and quicker approach to CPD and renewal of formal American Heart Association (AHA) certificates.

The e-Learning option is allowed for providers who already have successfully completed the most current version of the relevant AHA course – candidates must produce a current AHA / RCSA provider card. All participants must have a personal copy of the relevant current course textbook. The Resuscitation Council of SA does NOT endorse this e-Learning option for initial training, and when new course material is introduced by the AHA from time to time, the e-Learning option is only allowed after the first new course has been attended.

Candidates are not permitted to follow the e-Learning option if their card has expired; the e-Learning platform is one option available for candidates seeking renewal prior to their course expiry date. CPD allocations would only reflect the skills practise and testing sections – 1 CEU will be awarded per hour, giving credit to the actual hands-on manikin practice and skills testing.

To summarise, e-Learning is conducted using blended learning, i.e.:
Part 1: cognitive learning is completed online;
Part 2: hands-on skills practice session with RCSA / AHA BLS instructor;
Part 3 is skills test with current RCSA / AHA BLS instructor.

The duration of Part 2 (skills practice) should not be less than 45 minutes per candidate; and Part 3
(skills test) not less than 15 minutes per candidate.

Costs: Candidates can purchase part 1 – the cognitive portion – online:
http://www.onlineaha.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.purchaseInformation
Part 2: hands-on skills practice session with RCSA / AHA instructor – cost confirmed upon enquiry.
Part 3 is skills test with current RCSA / AHA instructor – cost confirmed upon enquiry.
